2009年7月份,我给一个老朋友(Simon FT-MBA,2010春季班)为申请MBA而写的Essay提了几点比较关键的修改建议。后来,她成功拿到Simon的Offer。再后来,她建议我做留学DIY咨询方面的工作,并向我介绍了我的第一个客户。最终,我的第一个客户也成功拿到几个TOP16商学院的面试并顺利拿到Duke Fuqua商学院MBA的录取。 本人毕业于上海复旦大学管理学院国际企业管理系,属于商科科班出身并且做过管理工作、有领导经验的人士。

Part II: The ApplicantsIn my last blog post, I discussed what it really means for a business school to “innovate,” using the expansion of Stanford GSB’s “Ignite” program as a current example.

 

Today, I would like to talk about what it means for a B-school MBA applicants to be innovative, and to demonstrate innovation in their application.

 

Working with the definition of innovation that I used last time- to introduce something new or make changes in something established– applicants need to show schools what new element they will bring to campus, or what nuance they can add to something established. So, how do you do that?

Before you can show a school what new element you will bring to campus, you need to answer that question for yourself.

 

Perhaps you have developed an interest in a particular country, or have strong interest in a combination of industries.

 

Maybe you have worked in your family business since you were small, or started your own business. Whatever it might be, try to pinpoint it as specifically as possible.

 

It is tempting to settle for vague, impressive words like “passion” or “leadership,” but I can promise you that nearly every applicant will say that they will bring passion and leadership to a campus.

 

Being more specific and highlighting the unique combinations and experiences that make up your passion and your brand of leadership will set you apart.

Once you have defined the specific brand of innovation that you can offer a school, you need to make sure that message is clearly delivered in your application.

 

This is where the essay section of your application can be extremely helpful and powerful.

 

This is also why I would suggest that most applicants write an essay, even when HBS makes it optional- see my commentary for Poets and Quants for more on that subject.

 

The essay is the perfect place to highlight experiences and ideas that test scores, academic records, and recommendations cannot entirely convey.

Again, the best ones highlight concrete examples and specifically explain how a particular experience or lesson has shaped you as a student, as a professional, and as a person.

 

It’s your chance to argue your case, in your own words. Make it count.

 

Accomplishing these two goals- defining the talents and experiences that would allow you to bring a new element to campus and conveying those in your application- will help you deliver an application that embodies your brand of innovation and that appeals to B-schools intensely competing to be the most innovative.
